I spent my whole childhood in my home village. My Dad didn’t take me to town until it was time for me to start eighth grade. Our school is good enough but I was entranced when I stood in front of the building of the high school where I was about to start: a grand staircase, a high carved door, windows with columns on the sides, and those windows so big that the city houses were coquettishly admiring their reflections in them.

Autumn came, classes started. At first, I was cowering in my new uniform, looking around with wide eyes. I missed my family, I missed you all and Dad, my brothers, my friends who stayed behind. Then I realized that my classmates were experiencing emotions like mine, and I calmed down. Our teachers in the village were good and the knowledge I gained allowed me to have certain self-confidence. Especially in mathematics – I, the plain peasant boy, beat the pants off the city boys. The high school maths teacher also felt that he could count on me and whenever there happened to be a difficult problem that my classmates couldn’t grapple with, he would ask me to the board to solve it. He sometimes even asked me to go to other classrooms. But once...

First let me tell you a little more about the maths teacher. He was strict but fair. And while other teachers found the “slapping rule” a normal matter or they would cane the naughty ones for a change, he had his own methods. Each of us had to carry an envelope in our bags addressed to our dads and a white sheet on which the offender had to write a text under the teacher’s dictation. The ”letter” almost always contained ten words: “Come and take me home, Dad – I won’t amount to anything!” I also had to write this once.

I don’t remember what the reason was, but you can understand what kind of teacher we had: you could be the teacher’s pet but if you deserved punishment you were bound to get it! Like Dostoevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment”. So there I was, I wrote the letter, slipped it in an envelope, sealed it and handed it over with a trembling hand. I knew my father stood no nonsense. And not only slapping could follow but he could actually write me off high school - “I won’t amount to anything” anyway”!

How I waited out the final school bell is beyond me. I asked the boy sitting next to me to take my bag. I borrowed some change from here and there and off I ran to the railway station. I had done my calculations carefully – I would get off the station closest to our village, then up over the hill and thus I would outrun the mailman... And that’s how it happened. I mumbled something in way of explanation about feeling homesick and then got back to the city as fast as I could. And Dad never found out that such a letter had been sent to him. Shortly after my graduation, not from high school but from the institute, he died. However, he was immensely happy and proud that his son was the first engineer in our village.
